Obligatory Election Day Scandal Story

By Eric Lipman

ADVERTISEMENTS
Yes, it's Election Day. I alluded to it in my earlier, largely off-topic, post about New York's 311 data. But I can't end the day without talking explicitly about some aspect of the whole "participatory democracy" thing. The WSJ Law Blog had a good roundup of election issues this morning, and Above the Law has all you want to know about recounts and how lawyers may profit from them. So what's left for us here at LBW? Well, lots. But I get to pick. So I picked this little story from Salon, about a clever way to mask the names of campaign contributors without the whole 501(c)(4) charade. Just do like California's Americans for Ethical Leadership, and don't form your organization until the week before Election Day! That way, you can't possibly have to report your donors on the FEC's last pre-election report. By the time anyone finds out who paid for that last-minute blitz of advertising badmouthing a particular candidate, it won't matter. I like it. Now I'm off to vote.
