: The GavelElection 2010: More Results are Reported
By Peter Hardin
In a fast-paced week, Gavel Grab still is catching up on these judicial elections returns:
- In Minnesota, Supreme Court Justices Helen Meyer and Alan Page cruised to new terms. Greg Wersal and Tim Tingelstad, respectively, were defeated, according to a Minneapolis Star Tribune article. Both of the challengers sought more open judicial elections.
- In North Carolina, Appeals Court judge Barbara Jackson beat fellow Judge Robert C. “Bob” Hunter for an opening on the state Supreme Court, the News & Observer reported. In a 13-way race for a seat on the Appeals Court, two top vote getters were identified, and the tabulation of results in an instant runoff will start Nov. 29.
- In Texas, Republican incumbent Justices Eva Guzman and Debra Lehrmann won over Democrats Blake Bailey and Jim Sharp in races for the state Supreme Court, the American-Statesman reported.
- Democratic Justice Thomas McHugh was elected to the West Virginia Supreme Court over Republican Judge John Yoder, according to an Associated Press article.
- In Arkansas, Appeals Judge Karen Baker defeated Judge Tim Fox for the state Supreme Court, an Arkansas Times blog reported.
- Georgia Justice David Nahmias will face a runoff election with challenger Tamela Adkins, according to an Associated Press article.
- In Washington state, Justice Richard Sanders was narrowly leading challenger Charlie Wiggins, and returns were still being counted, the Associated Press reported.
More details are available from an elections roundup page of the National Center for State Courts, a partner of Justice at Stake.
