Dempsey on International Criminal Law & Philosophy

By Lawrence Solum

ADVERTISEMENTS

Michelle Madden Dempsey (Villanova University School of Law) has posted Breaking New Ground in International Criminal Law and Philosophy (Transnational Legal Theory, Vol. 1, No. 3, p. 453, 2010) on SSRN. Here is the abstract:

This is a book review of Larry May and Zachary Hoskins, eds., International Criminal Law and Philosophy (Cambridge University Press, 2010) 258 pp.

And from the text:

Larry May and Zachary Hoskins? anthology, International Criminal Law and Philosophy, is in many respects a ground-breaking work. For starters, it is the first collection of essays to bring together both legal and philosophical perspectives on the workings of modern international criminal law. For that reason alone, its arrival is to be welcomed and it will likely enjoy a wide readership. Several contributions to the volume, moreover, are ground-breaking in the sense that they encourage breaking new ground in international criminal law itself?expanding the scope and reach of international criminal law both jurisdictionally and substantively. In order to highlight this feature of the book, this review will organise its discussion of the book?s 12 chapters around the ways in which the authors? arguments endorse expanding or restricting the scope of international criminal law.
