Cincinnati Attempts to Buy Estate Mansion

By Alan Ackerman

ADVERTISEMENTS

The City of Cincinnati can foresee its long term needs are to maintain the estates even if no longer desirable for residential purposes. These pre-20th Century mansions simply are too large and too cut up for a family ever desire to maintain the property. Given the location of many of the older mansions, if they are to survive at all, they must survive in a different use. The Cincinnati City Council has it right. Rather than tear a mansion down and simply redevelop a new residential or commercial property, the Cincinnati City Councilman Winburn suggests that the property be purchased and the building remodeled for a public use. The problem with this notion may be that it is far more expensive than Mr. Winburn could contemplate. If the rehabilitation of the mansion is not a great cost, the purchase certainly is sensible.

Winburn says the city could turn the mansion into a museum to help turn around the surrounding neighborhood, which has been hurt by crime.

The house is now owned by a foundation that wants to tear it down. It's suing the city for a demolition permit.
