The head of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, Fernando Mateo, is telling his drivers ?that for their own protection they should profile potential passengers who are black and Latino.? (HaTip to Drudge)
Mateo, who identifies himself as both black and Hispanic, made his comments this week after a livery cab driver was shot several times by a man police describe as Hispanic.Mateo?s comments were denounced by ?Taxi and Limousine Commissioner David Yassky, who said that ?choosing which passengers to serve on the basis of race is illegal, downright wrong and simply unacceptable.??
Yassky?s right. But if instead of saying ?which passengers to serve,? he had said it is ?illegal, downright wrong, and and simply unacceptable? to choose which students to admit or which applicants to hire on the basis of race, he would be called a racist by many who claim to agree with him.
