: Food Poison BlogIn wake of outbreak, Jimmy Johns switches to clover sprouts
By Drew Falkenstein
Jimmy John Liautaud, owner of the Jimmy Johns sandwich chain that has been implicated in a multistate Salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 59 Illinois residents, has decided that his restaurants are going to stop serving alfalfa sprouts. Alfalfa sprouts, which have been implicated in multiple Salmonella outbreaks recently that have ensnared Jimmy Johns restaurants, will be replaced by clover sprouts. Jimmy Johns logic is that clover sprouts are easier to sanitize than alfalfa sprouts.
In other news, clover sprouts were recently implicated in a Salmonella outbreak in Oregon and Washington. At least 2 Oregon residents became ill in the Salmonella outbreak after eating contaminated clover sprouts on Jimmy Johns sandwiches. The sprouts were grown by a Washington company called Sprouters Northwest.
