Posted on February 10, 2009
Four thousand four hundred and thirty five dollars. No, that’s not my monthly rent (although it is close). Instead, it’s the typical total of charges incurred for one’s first OWI (according to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division)...

Posted on February 09, 2009
It's time out in surgery, as hospitals watch doctors by Minneapolis Star Tribune writer Maura Lerner – This article discusses the use of a “Time-out Towel”. We aren’t changing the oil in a car, its surgery; we are operating on a human body...

Food Safety: What tests prove I have salmonella poisoning?

Posted on February 09, 2009
As lawyers we see the worse case scenarios. From my desk in Iowa I’ve watched the wreckage for more years than I’d like to admit to. Not counting the clinic work at Drake Law School this is my 28th year of practicing personal injury, workers’ compensation, malpractice and other kinds of civil trial work having to do with all types of personal injury...

Posted on February 06, 2009
As an American, if you don't believe in some form of regulating imported products then you're a communist. If as an American you don't think the people of China need freedom of speech then you are a communist. The melamine contaminated baby milk from China is into its next phase...

Posted on February 06, 2009
Huh? Are you kidding me? No, this is for real. I just wrote a blawg post about a Las Vegas jury that found no negligence when a man complaining of chest pain isn’t even examined for 41” minutes and then died of a heart attack on the E.R...

Las Vegas Jury Failed to Follow the Law, in Finding for Hospital on Issue of Negligence

Posted on February 05, 2009
A jury in Las Vegas gave the nod to a hospital whose standard of emergent care is to wait 41 minutes to examine a patient complaining of chest pains, and who then dies in the emergency room floor. The jury actually deliberated for 79 minutes longer than it took the emergency room staff to put their hands on this man suffering a heart attack in the emergency room...

Driving Safety: The Dangers of Shoulder Drop-offs

Posted on February 04, 2009
As mentioned in yesterday’s article, I had my first car accident (yes, first – reckless driving, ignorance and a sense of immortality led me to have several) when I was just 16-years old. After that accident, my parents ground me from driving for about a month – which was fine with me; there was no way I was getting behind the wheel again anytime soon...

Driving Safety: winter weather increases accidents and keeps drivers on their 'tires'

Posted on February 03, 2009
As mentioned yesterday, I consider myself very fortunate that I no longer have to drive (as driving isn’t really my ‘thing’); however, I also know that I don’t intend to stay in New York forever and that my lack of driving is only temporary...

Posted on February 03, 2009

Food Safety: Melamine accusations are too little too late

Posted on February 02, 2009
Who speaks for the mothers and fathers with infants in renal failure? Who shouts for justice for those same parents of the children who died from the melamine contamination of babies’ milk? Which government officials in China will be punished? Charged with crimes? Fired? Forced to resign? Who took bribes? There is no justice in China...

Driving Safety: Auto fatalities dropping, but we can do better. "Yes, we can."

Posted on February 02, 2009

Posted on January 30, 2009

Diet Safety: Over-vitaminizing as a trend

Posted on January 29, 2009
As mentioned time and time again, January is diet safety month on InjuryBoard. I think it’s safe to say when most of us think of diet safety, we think of weight loss and physical fitness. Fair enough. To be honest, I do, too. However, there are numerous other subjects that fit under the “diet safety” umbrella...

Diet Safety: Why the Fuss?

Posted on January 28, 2009
If you follow the InjuryBoard blogs, you probably know that I’ve spent the better part of the month writing on the issues surrounding diet pills / supplements. For many of the reviewed products, the potential side effects and adverse health effects were similar in scope (not that they were the same, but many such effects are attributed to caffeine and other stimulants, which inevitably cause increased blood pressure and heart rate, restlessness, anxiety, etc)...
