Posted on October 23, 2008
Despite the fact that a District Court judge has issued a preliminary injunction barring the Department of Homeland Security from implementing its No-Match rule, the agency has released a new rule that is identical to the proposed rule issued last spring (which was virtually identical to the 2007 rule enjoined by Judge Brier)...

IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: ZBIGNIEW BRZEZINSKI - STATESMAN

Posted on October 21, 2008
Maybe its a state of the times that Zbigniew Brzezinski's daughter Mika, co-host of MSNBC's popular Morning Joe political chat show, is probably better known than her father. The Polish-born Professor Brzezinski was, however, President Carter's National Security Advisor...

"TODAY WE MARCH, TOMORROW WE VOTE"

Posted on October 21, 2008
Remember those words chanted during the immigration protests in 2006? I'm sure a few people will regret ignoring that warning given reports that are popping up on voter registration efforts in immigrant communities. Nearly one million Latino immigrants have naturalized since the summer of 1986...

LAS VEGAS BECOMES LATEST 287(g) CITY

Posted on October 18, 2008
The police department of America's playground is the latest to sign a pact with Immigration and Customs enforcement to turn over immigrants in their custody to the immigration enforcement agency. The local sheriff promises that only immigrants in the city's jails will be turned over and cops on the beat won't seek out immigrants to turn over to ICE...

HEADS UP: E-VERIFY RULE LIKELY WILL BE OUT IN NEXT FEW WEEKS

Posted on October 15, 2008
DHS has sent its draft regulations regarding requiring federal contractors to use E-Verify to the Office of Management and Budget for a final review. Expect the rule to be published very soon. Don't be surprised if a lawsuit is filed to block the rule from taking effect because DHS is expected to state that the rule will not be economically significant, something that is necessary for the rule to be fast tracked.

MCCAIN STILL NOT ABLE TO REVERSE DAMAGE WITH HISPANIC VOTERS

Posted on October 13, 2008
Whether John McCain really meant it or was just trying to sway right wing anti-immigrant Republicans when he said he would no longer support his immigration reform bill, Hispanics are not giving him the benefit of the doubt.

BLOGGING FROM BUENOS AIRES

Posted on October 12, 2008
Hi Folks - I'm speaking at the annual meeting of the International Bar Association in Buenos Aires, Argentina this week. I'll be blogging, but not as much as usual. In the mean time, I'll be thinking of you as I chow down gnocci and dulce de leche (but not together).

THE FIRST 100 DAYS

Posted on October 10, 2008
As Barack Obama continues to enjoy a wide lead in national opinion polls, a number of news organizations report that the Democrat is already planning for the transition including planning appointments and legislative strategy. While some may think this is presumptuous, it's actually incredibly responsible given the frightenting situation in the world right now...

Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff commented yesterday on a crime and security agreement reached with the Slovak government: So before I turn it over to the Minister, I want to emphasize that we remain committed to Visa Waiver Program expansion at the earliest opportunity...

IMMIGRATION NOT COMING UP IN THE DEBATES

Posted on October 08, 2008
After three debates involving the Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin candidates, the one subject that has not come up is immigration. And I don't think it is a coincidence. Public opinion polls are showing the issue has dropped dramatically on the list of important subjects for Americans...

EVIDENCE PILES UP THAT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION TO THE US IS DRAMATICALLY DOWN

Posted on October 08, 2008
I've been reporting on this for a little while. DHS is now reporting that the number of apprehensions near the US-Mexico has fallen substantially - 78% - since this time last year. The government believes that fewer people are attempting to cross since enforcement resources have been increasing, not decreasing...

The Phoenix Business Journal is reporting that there has been a surge in tips being filed with the Phoenix Sheriff's office against employers allegedly hiring illegally present immigrants. ICE LAUNCHES ANOTHER MEGA-RAID AT A SOUTH CAROLINA POULTRY PLANT

Posted on October 07, 2008
ICE has been launched another raid at a food processing facility, this time a poultry plant in South Carolina. Regrettably, these raids will drive food prices up at a time when Americans can really not afford to spend more money. Illegal immigration has been dropping dramatically since DHS launched its enforcement campaign last summer...

BUSH ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCES IT MAY YANK "INEFFECTIVE ASSISTANCE" DEFENSE IN IMMIGRATION PROCEEDINGS

Posted on October 07, 2008
This is really, really disturbing news. I have seen many, many cases in my years in practice where people received incompetent representation and their lives have been wrecked. An individual can sometimes ask a judge to take a look at the record and if the judge agrees that poor lawyering seriously damaged the client, the judge can take this in to consideration...
