CNN BLOCKS MEDIA MATTERS' DOBBS AD FROM RUNNING

Posted on August 05, 2009
Well, I guess it's not really a surprise that CNN blinked and decided to block Media Matters ads criticizing Lou Dobbs from running on the network. What is more amusing is that they are so freaked out about the ads that they're apparently pressuring local stations not to air the ads either.

MCCAIN: GOP NEEDS TO COURT HISPANICS IF IT HOPES TO EVER REGAIN MAJORITY STATUS

Posted on August 03, 2009
Politico reports on a McCain interview with CNN. The other interesting takeaway is McCain's indication that he'll stand firm in insisting on a guest worker program in the comprehensive immigration reform bill if he's going to work for its passage. I hope he's successful in that effort...

AP: DOBBS BECOMING PUBLICITY NIGHTMARE FOR CNN

Posted on August 03, 2009
Here's another article discussing the embarrassment that is CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight. I don't need to elaborate on that, but the more interesting part of this article is a discussion of why CNN is so reluctant to fire him. Apparently, it's more fear of Dobbs going to Fox and worry about Dobbs using his radio show to bash CNN...

Just a reminder that my colleagues Lynn Susser, Ari Sauer and I will have the next in our regular free teleconferences on immigration topics. This call's theme is "Deciphering the State Department Visa Bulletin" and we'll be explaining how priority dates work, what the various terms mean, and how to interpret movements month to month...

LIKE IMPORTED OIL? YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE DEPENDING ON IMPORTED FOOD

Posted on August 02, 2009
The antis will tell you that if we could only get rid of cheap foreign workers, Americans would be lining up to take the jobs. An article this past week in the Wall Street Journal shows a different reality. The piece focuses on the dairy industry which is completely dependent on immigrant labor even in a major recession...

Date of entry requirement for eligibility: The required date of entry should be as close to the date of introduction of the bills as possible...

ANTIS PEDDLING MYTH THAT ILLEGALLY PRESENT IMMIGRANTS WILL BE INCLUDED IN HEALTH CARE PLAN

Posted on August 02, 2009
Opponents of health care reform efforts have accused the President and Democrats in Congress of including millions of illegally present immigrants in proposals to expand health insurance coverage. Whether one thinks that including such individuals is good or bad, the fact is that only lawfully present immigrants will be eligible for inclusion in the various proposals being considered in Congress...

JOE KLEIN: DOBBS A "PUBLIC EMBARRASSMENT"

Posted on August 02, 2009
Harsh words from the senior columnist for Time Magazine:Lou Dobbs continues to make a fool of himself, of CNN and of Time Warner, which owns this blog and pays my salary. When Jim DeMint, the oh-so-conservative Senator from South Carolina, says that the Obama birth certificate isn't an issue, and when electronic copies of the birth certificate have been produced--and certified--by the state of Hawaii, one wonders why Dobbs keeps flogging this...

THE GOP'S LAST CHANCE

Posted on July 29, 2009
The fact that the GOP has no clear plan to win the election next year other than hoping President Obama fails so miserably that people will feel no choice but to vote Republican became more apparent yesterday. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 13 to 6 to confirm Judge Sotomayor as the next Supreme Court Justice...

TAHA DEPORTATION BLOCKED

Posted on July 28, 2009
Really good news. A few days ago I wrote about efforts to stop the deportation of Walter Taha, a young man who entered the US at the age of two who would be an ideal DREAM Act recipient. Citizen Orange reports that the flurry of calls, faxes and emails about Walter were enough to convince them to defer Walter's deportation to allow him to attend college.

BORDER PATROL AGENT KILLED IN LINE OF DUTY

Posted on July 25, 2009
While I think the US immigration system is badly broken and we are wasting tremendous resources fighting the wrong battles, I have a deep respect for those in the US Border Patrol who are acting in service to their country and often putting their safety at risk...

FEDS INVESTIGATING BORDER PATROL AGENTS' RACIST WEB POSTING

Posted on July 25, 2009
One of the comments on my post earlier today about the killed Border Patrol agent seemed pretty harsh - accusing most BP agents of being restrictionists with bad motives. I still think that's harsh and most Border Patrol agents are honestly out to do the necessary job of protecting our country's borders...

NATION'S TOP COPS AGREE ON NEED FOR IMMIGRATION REFORM

Posted on July 25, 2009
If the restrictionists were really on the right side of the law and order argument, wouldn't they havelaw enforcement on their side? Sheriff Joe does not a movement make.Funny how Phoenix was chosen for the location of this forum. From the Arizona Republic: Some of the nation's top police officers on Wednesday called upon Congress to promptly adopt an immigration-reform measure, saying local law-enforcement agencies across America are struggling to deal with crime and confusion caused by a broken system...

NEW PEW STUDY SHOWS IMMIGRATION FROM MEXICO HAS DECLINED SHARPLY

Posted on July 25, 2009
The study is consistent with other reports. Pew blames the decline on the recession while others blame tougher enforcement. I've stated before that I think it is a combination of the two. Pew also reports that the number of Mexicans returning home has not changed significantly.

DOBBS SUGGESTS OBAMA IS UNDOCUMENTED

Posted on July 24, 2009
There's a phrase in American pop culture - "jump the shark" that seems appropriate about now. I guess in the facing rapidly declining ratings, Mr. Dobbs is resorting to even more extreme rhetoric and has now joined the "birthers" desperately peddling one of the sillier conspiracy theories out there...
