Very funny...
Posted on January 18, 2008Via Instapundit comes this from IowaHawk. First paragraphs: "Bylines of Brutality As Casualties Mount, Some Question The Emotional Stability of Media Vets An Iowahawk Special Investigative Report With Statistical Guidance from the New York Times A Denver newspaper columnist is arrested for stalking a story subject...
US to give Mexico access to gun registries
Posted on January 18, 2008Story here. The headline is perhaps a little overstated: the terminals will be in US Consulates. But it strikes me as strange that if the Mexican government wanted to trace recovered firearms that might have come from the US, they don't just send the info in an email and request the data.
Another dumb criminal story
Posted on January 17, 2008Robber enters convenience story, at one point puts pistol back in waistband. And manages to shoot himself in the scrotum.
GA Senate action
Posted on January 17, 2008The GA senate passed well, something. News report is only clear that it would let CCW holders carry in State parks. The original would have let employees store in locked cars on their employers' parking lots, but committee action (due to Chamber of Commerce objections) would have limited that, too, to CCW permittees...
Glenn Reynolds and Brannon Denning on Parker
Posted on January 17, 2008Their article, "The Year of the Gun," is online here.
Michigan deer permit issues
Posted on January 17, 2008I'm with Bitter on this tempest in a teapot. From what I can gather, there's a big fight over Michigan raising its deer tag fee from $5 (where it's been since 1966, in days of 25 cent gas), to a whole $15. I gather from news clips that it also proposed to raise hunting license fees from $15 to $30...
Fred Thompson on DoJ brief
Posted on January 16, 2008Here's the story. Too busy writing to say more.
News from GA
Posted on January 16, 2008This story is ambiguous (as well as misusing "diffuse" for "defuse"), but it sounds as if the Senate Rules Committee (a) restricted the bill to cover only CCW permittees who want to store a gun in their car while parked at work and (b) added a provision allowing CCW permitees to carry in State parks.
A few takes on Solicitor General's brief
Posted on January 15, 2008Sandy Froman has a Townhall column on the subject, and Brett's Constitution takes issue with my reading.
Georgia Senate fast-tracks bill allowing guns in business parking lots
Posted on January 15, 2008Story here. Rules Committee is apparently voting out a rule for its consideration.
DC's shortage of amici
Posted on January 14, 2008The NY Sun notices. DC is supported by five state AGs (the challengers have 30 lined up, last I heard, to support the 2nd Amendment), and 18 Congressmen (don't know the count, but I'd expect Parker/Heller to have 5-10x that many). Their "scholars" brief was supported by two law profs and, what, 4-6 history profs.
Instapunk on the DoJ position
Posted on January 14, 2008I have an uncanny feeling that he doesn't care much for it.
LA Times on Parker & Dept of Justice Brief
Posted on January 13, 2008Story here. As might be expected, the Times barely mentions that the brief accepts individual rights.
NRA statement on DoJ Parker brief
Posted on January 12, 2008It didn't take them long to react! Statement of the National Rifle Association by Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox on the pending U.S. Supreme Court case: In the coming months, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider the constitutionality of Washington, D...
Government files amicus -- on DC's side!
Posted on January 11, 2008PDF here. Quick read: Gov't says, yes, it's an individual right. BUT we join with DC in asking Court to reverse the DC Circuit, because it applied strict scrutiny to the DC law. It should only have applied an intermediate standard. That is, the legal position of the US is that DC CIrcuit was wrong, a complete ban on handguns is NOT per se unconstitutional, it all depends on how good a reason DC can prove for it...
AP on Parker -- gets almost everything wrong
Posted on January 11, 2008Story here. "in which justices will decide whether the Constitution's Second Amendment bars a conviction under tough Washington, D.C. handgun laws." "The case stems from the conviction of Dick Heller, a 65-year-old security guard who had a permit to carry a handgun at work but was denied a license to keep one at his home in what had been a high crime neighborhood...
DC Circuit upholds dismissal of suit against gun makers
Posted on January 11, 2008It's discussed at the Volokh Conspiracy.
Historians' brief for DC
Posted on January 11, 2008Here. Caveat: pdf, 300K. Can't post all the amici when they come in today, as 30-40 are expected, but as soon as the Supreme Ct. puts them online, they'll be here. You have to scroll down to find District v. Heller.
Light blogging for a time
Posted on January 10, 2008Been working on an amicus in Parker/Heller. As in 10-12 hour workdays. Interesting event today. A small group of historians filed an amicus in support of DC. And went 552 words over the word limit. So they have to resubmit tommorrow, the deadline. Since S...
Armed pizza deliverymen
Posted on January 09, 2008There's been so many cases of self defense by armed pizza deliverymen that Clayton Cramer's self defense blog has set up a separate category. As he notes, the joke used to be, call 911 and call a pizza place, and see which gets there first -- now we can add, and the deliveryman is likely to be as well armed as the officer!
