Medical Marijuana May Be Business of the Year! Will Bankruptcy Debtors Toke to Reduce Anxiety?

By Joseph McDaniel, Esq.

ADVERTISEMENTS
In California, medical marijuana is supposed to be a non-profit project.

Based on the number of medical marijuana locations operating in California, it's a little more "for-profit" than "not-for-profit".

And I expect that the number of folks stricken with various and sundry debilitating diseases will go up radically when medical marijuana becomes easily available in Arizona.

Now, I'm old; when I was young, I knew lots of folks who used marijuana for recreational purposes, and my guess is that they still do so.

And my belief is that there is too much suffering in the world, and that almost anything that alleviates suffering is a good thing, if you don't overdo it.

But I am confused by a strange, funky trend in the law, which has to do with the Supremacy Clause; the theory we are taught in law school is that a federal statute trumps a state statute, which ought to mean (to a simple back-country bankruptcy lawyer) that any state statute would be struck down (or not even placed on a ballot) if it conflicted with a federal statute.

Obviously, I'm wrong!

But I'm certainly right about the following:

--when my friends have cancer, which happens more frequently than I would like, they will find it easier to get marijuana than previously;
--when my friends develop mood disorders and complain about them, they will find it easier to get marijuana than previously;

And when nice people discover that their prior business model didn't work very well, and they need a new business model, my guess is that they may decide that medical marijuana is the new business model that makes sense for them!

And only time will tell, but I expect that there will be an economic beneficiary from the new medical marijuana law in Arizona, and that will be....the fast food industry!

Do they still call it "the munchies"?

p.s. do you think that marijuana will become less trendy if the public image of it involves old people dragging on a joint so that they throw up less frequently? It's hard to tell about these things.

p.p.s. I just got spammed by a company selling medical marijuana! Some folks were expecting the statute to pass, and were ready to pounce on the opportunity!
