N.J. officials cite security in holding salt-barn plans

By By The Associated Press

ADVERTISEMENTS

BETHLEHEM TOWNSHIP, N.J. ? New Jersey cited homeland-security concerns when it refused a woman's request to see plans for a barn to store road salt.

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit in Hunterdon County seeking to force the state to release the construction plans.

Carole Chiaffarano, who lives next to the barn in Bethlehem Township, filed an Open Public Records Act request. She suspected the plans were not approved by one or more government agencies.

The state denied her request citing a 2002 executive order signed by Gov. James McGreevey after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. It allows the state to withhold information that would compromise the state's security.

The Star-Ledger of Newark reported that a spokeswoman for the Community Affairs Department declined to comment on the pending lawsuit.
