Nescafe Espresso Recalled for Glass

By Dan Flynn and Suzanna Schreck

ADVERTISEMENTS
Nescafe Espresso instant coffee sold in Canada is being recalled because the product may contain small fragments of glass.

Canadians were warned not to consume the instant espresso when the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Nestlé Canada announced the product recall May 20.

The affected product, Nescafé Espresso instant coffee, imported from France, is sold in 100 g glass jars with a black sleeve bearing UPC 5500065052. All lot codes are affected by this alert.

This product has been distributed throughout Canada.

No illnesses or injuries have been associated with the recall.

The importer, Nestlé Canada Inc, North York, ON is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

For more information, consumers and industry can call Nestlé Consumer Services at 1-800-387-4636 or CFIA at 1-800-442-2342.

Beginning with canned milk in 1887, Nestlé products have long been sold in Canada.  Since purchasing a small milk factory in Ontario in 1918, Nestlé Canada Inc. has grown to employ approximately 3,500 people in 21 manufacturing, sales, and distribution sites across the country.

It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Nestlé S.A.; its annual Canadian sales in 2009 were approximately $2.1 billion.

CFIA is the primary food safety agency of the federal government of Canada.
