Saturday House is fun and valuable

By Michael Rice

ADVERTISEMENTS
Saturday House 1I finally made it over to Saturday House today, and I'm really sorry I didn't do it before. For those who read Coderights often, you're probably tired of hearing this, but Phoenix (where I'm from) didn't have a critical mass of passionate technologists willing to hang out, like the folks at Saturday House. (Of course, things might have changed a bit since I was there.)

Saturday House 2There are of lot of things to really like. First, I heard some really amazing conversations (especially from Patrick Haller), and it was just in passing. Indeed, I wonder if the participants don't even take it all for granted. Second, the space is really creative and just fun to be in (especially if you're like me, and you spent too much time in sterile corporate environments). Third, the people themselves are incredibly warm and... just all around cool. I can't think of a single thing I didn't like.

I think Saturday House is mostly a community powered group, but I associate it with Brian Dorsey of Noonhat fame. Interested in going? GO. This is from the site: "We desire diversity in knowledge, diversity in backgrounds, but presently, we are interested in accumulating members. When we look at people, we ask ourselves questions like, 'Does this person love learning? Does this person love ideas? Does this person pursue interesting action? Does this person know something cool? Does this person care about life?'"

Also, Mr. Dorsey graciously helped me to get a build of Skillbit on my laptop. It runs Django and Python, so I needed his help. Thank you Brian!
