Are my informal e-mails legaly binding contracts?

By IBLS Editor

My question is in regards to personal emails, about my business, breeding dogs, and "promises" thought to be made to another party. I have a friend who has purchased a dog from me earlier this year. Through email conversation, he asked me if I would "give" him a dog from an up comming breeding I had planned. I jokingly replied "sure" and left it at that. Now that the litter has been born, this so called "friend" is expecting to receive a puppy from me at no charge. My question is: Am I legally obligated to abide by this email to give him a dog at no charge?? Can he pursue any legal action towards me if I do not fulfill his predisposed notions that I was at all serious?? I sell ALL of my pups under a strict contract and I never made one with him for this "arrangement"! I am concerned because I run a very straight forward business, pull no punches with my buyers and have a good reputation within the mastiff community. Please let me know if I am in any way legally obligated to my business from a personal email, that was in essense - not to be taken seriously!! Thank you for any and all assistance
