How to Become a Professional Con Artist
"If it sounds too good to be true, then you're dealing with an amateur con artist." Dennis Marlock

Dennis Marlock has written an interesting book on the art of the short con, important for our understanding of persuasive techniques of con criminals.

This is an excellent practical book, and don't think that "you are not the sort of person" that could fall for one of these tricks.

The method of fraud may very from the short con on the corner, to the company constructed only for the purpose of fraud, to the companies like Enron, and now Fannie and Freddie Mac who have slipped over the edge.

But the con criminals always have a rationalization, according to Dennis:

"I am just doing what hardworking suckers would like to be doing, but they just don't have the guts to take a chance."

Marlock correctly points out, at least in America, there is a tendency to romanticize the fraud criminal as cleverly performed trick, like a magician, who is only stealing from the suckers.

There is no bigger obstacle to overcoming the reporting of fraud than to get rid of this picture, a picture that many of our movies are based upon.

Dennis Marlock also has his own website, Fraudltech.bizland.com and writes:

"Within these pages you shall be subjected to the methods used by others to make your life miserable.

Unless you enjoy being lied to, deceived, or made to play the part of a fool, then there is much to be learned here.

After my retirement from the Milwaukee Police Department, where I served as a Lieutenant of Detectives within the Intelligence Division, I decided to share with others the experiences and knowledge I gained from my specialty, which was the investigation of frauds and con games.

Having written four books and numerous articles on the subject, and after speaking with countless citizen and law enforcement groups, I am convinced that most people do not realize the impact fraud has on their daily lives, or how easy we have made it for others to deceive us."

Buy his book, if you want to understand how some of the best short cons work, why we continue to allow fraud, and a clever understanding of how to undo the real prisoner's dilemma. (If you are only interested in Marlock's understanding of how to make real prisoner's confess, don't buy the book - I am about to reveal his secret in a forthcoming post.
