Books & Politics

By "Daisy Duke"

ADVERTISEMENTS
First off.... Beach Music reviews...get them to me!! Post will (hopefully) go up sometime tomorrow but I've only gotten maybe 5 reviews and I know around 20-25 people were reading the book... so all I can say is get'r'done!

And now, politics. I'm taking today to officially announce that beyond reminding all of you to vote, I won't be discussing politics or the election on this blog, other than to say "Whew...it is over." You might think that is is cowardly, weak, or sticking my head in the sand. I however firmly believe in the old adage of not discussing religion or politics in mixed company, and I just can't think of a forum more mixed than this.

I am strong in my beliefs, on issues & agendas, but I haven't decided who I am voting for. Rest assured I will vote, but I have a lot of distaste in my mouth for all 4 candidates on the two major tickets and I'm not sure who I'm eventually going to go with. Both parties have taken the opposite stance (than mine) on issues I feel strongly about, and I suppose I have to decide what is most important to me. This I find to be a personal decision, and while I certainly don't mind other's input, I have zero energy or patience to deal with or referee the inevitable squabbling amongst the commenter's & readers.

I also might add that there are many bloggers out there who concisely & eloquently can and do discuss politics, or, if nothing else, do so with passion & ferver. I can honestly say I have little passion in this election and thus, feel ill-prepared to discuss it or share my less-than-concise views.  If you are looking for a discussion or debate on politics in America, I direct you to their corners of the internet where they will happily & often allow for discussion on the issue, or at least the opportunity to read their insight on an issue or two. Check out my blogroll, as many of those on it will likely have much to say about the upcoming election & the candidates in the running.

I can tell you I stand strong behind the ideals of a woman's right to chose, that I do believe that there are glimmers of good coming out of our long-fought battle in Iraq, the idea of certain countries with nuclear power (and an agenda behind it) terrifies me, I think a strong education is the key to ending poverty, and I believe that homosexuals should be able to enjoy the same freedoms in marriage & child rearing as a heterosexual couple. I don't know where this puts me on the political spectrum, other than to say I don't fit neatly in any category, and as such, consider this forum to be a page free of politics & division- other than the hoarse battle cry that those who do not exercise their right to vote have no business criticizing or campaigning.

In closing...Rock the Vote. See you on the flip-side.
