Dilemma

ADVERTISEMENTS
I have this law school friend who was super fabulous for the first few months that I knew her. We always had tons of fun out at happy hours, hanging out with other friends, etc. All of a sudden, last winter, this friend started to get horribly clingy. She would text me every 10-15 minutes until I responded, she wanted to hang out all the time and she just didn't seem to understand that I had many other things going on in life, including other friends, which meant that I couldn't devote every free moment to hanging out with her (not to mention the fact that I actually cherish my alone time and don't really want to actually use up every free waking moment of my day). I've told her many times that I am very busy and she just doesn't seem to get it.

Finally, around the holidays this year I spent a good two weeks at my parent's in which I decided I wasn't emailing or returning texts or taking phone calls from this friend, no matter how many times she persisted because she just didn't seem to get it, if I ignored her she kept trying to bug me and if I finally gave in and called her back she took that to mean that we are now BFFs and wanted to plan all kinds of activities for the next month. The ignoring seemed to work. The emailing and the texting all decreased in frequency and I have happily returned to my frantic life as a final semester law student- which has included more than a week in which I have not gotten more than 5 hours of sleep a night- and this is really not due to homework so much as it is due to my social life :-) But I digress . . .

Annoying friend called me today (while I was skiing by the way) and left me this voicemail that borders on the sense of absolute urgency basically saying "omg I have no idea if you're okay, or alive, or whatever, call me."

Dilemma: do I call?? I really really really don't want to, because it will just open the can of worms all over again, and it won't matter what I tell her, if I call her back she'll think we're BFFs and she'll want to plan happy hour/dinner/etc and then the cycle of incessant emailing and texting will begin again. But on the other hand I do get where she's coming from, I definitely tend to worry about people and although I don't think we're best buds, if someone who I did think of as a best bud did drop off the face of the planet I would be worried too.

What to do, what to do?
