Last week I had a dream about an old friend of mine, who through a falling-out, is no longer a friend of mine. It is and was a situation that smelled badly from the beginning, and I think back sometimes and wonder if it could have gone differently. My ultimate conclusion has become that the "thing" that caused the end might not have happened....but the end would have come as the result of another, different thing. Last week in my dream I was walking down a sidewalk on a gorgeous summer day when I ran into the old friend in front of a sidewalk cafe. We sat down and ordered cherry cokes and chatted for what was hours, catching up on the good and bad in our respective lives since we had last spoken angry words at each other. Near the end, I looked at her and said "I've really missed you" and she sort of turned her face away and said "I've missed you too." In the dream (as only dreams can be) I suddenly started to say "Do you think we could...." and while I knew the end of the sentence was "be friends again?" her voice interrupted my thoughts and she said "No". It wasn't unkind or mean, and in fact, it sounded a little sad. I looked at her again and said "You are right. We can't be friends again." Then, both crying, we gave each other a hug and continued walking our respective, different ways down the sidewalk.
I think this is my way of telling myself it is time to let it go. I suppose I should. Sometimes though, no matter how right your gut knows something is, it doesn't make it any easier.
