More on the Hezbollah-Style Fist Jabbing

ADVERTISEMENTS
Yesterday I posted the video of the "fist bump" between Barack and Michelle Obama. Thinking about it more last night, I realized it was sweeter and even more loving than previously thought.

First, it's understated. Like, good job winning the Democratic nomination for President dude, after 17 months of grueling campaigning. It would be meaningful only between two people who had experienced that grind together, which Michelle and Barack obviously have.

Second, it's a couples' moment admidst a sea of people. While it's obviously going to be seen by thousands or millions of people (and maybe trillions now that it's on EU), it's a moment between two people who clearly love each other deeply.

JS and I had a conversation about this phenomenon at a recent wedding we attended together. JS noticed that the groom was staring at and talking to the bride intensely during the first dance.

Because it had the effect of carving out a moment of privacy at an event with hundreds of onlookers, we both thought the groom's gesture was uniquely special. I think the fist pump here is of the same category of gestures.
