Liveblogging the SBA debate

ADVERTISEMENTS

- So, there's basically no one running for anything.  The VP slot and Treasurer position are uncontested.  Congrats, Steph and Ian!  As mentioned earlier Allison B. is running a write-in candidacy against Nobody.  UPDATE: She is running a campaign against Nobody and Aaron F., a 1L.  Nobody is on the ballot.  Aaron and Allison are not.

- People are starting to sit.  They brought way too many chairs.  Like 30 people here.  Including candidates.

- Jerry P., alleged VP, is starting the show.  "It's too bad they can't all win."  Unless they're running for something other than president.

- Candidates are introducing themselves.  Jackie is "a little short."  She loves UVA Law.  Has ideas: parking, grade release policy, wants more coffee.  Wants to feed people in class from 11-2.

- Otis says we are at a crossroads.  OUR RANKING IS FALLING!!! He is the candidate of change.  He wants to change parking.  He wants to change dinning hours.  He has talked with people about this.  "Intimitely familiar" with how to get things done.  ????

- Ryan.  Candidate of transition.  Wants students to have a say over where university goes.  Wants to maintain balance between school and student life.  (Btw, this is the real issue.  The translation is "I will fight to keep beer.")

- Jerry wants to know what the SBA is.  Jackie says it is students who care, who want to maintain traditions, maintain collegiality.  She is the candidate of maintenance.  SBA allows us to go to Foxfield's and lunch with professors.

- Otis says, "It brings about improving the law school."  Parking is still a major issue.  He wants meters.  Wants SBA to increase dining hours.  Hmm.  I've heard that somewhere.  Wants to employ undergrads from 2-6 in Greenberry's.

- Ryan says SBA is the students voice.  He also knows what it is.  He is on it.  He controls the budget.  He planned foxfield.  He planned tubing.  He is the SBA.  He already is going to a meeting about Parking!  Snap.

- Question is about goals.  We predict parking, dining hours.

- Otis confirms our prediction.  Also, tech stuff.  Plans to increase US News rankings by electing him.  He will work.

- Ryan plans on making the new Dean listen to him and to students.  "Dialogue."  "Exchange of ideas."  "Express their concerns."  "Excellent voice."  "Address concerns."

- Jackie says we've already fixed parking and the web site.  Otis has one thing left to do.  Jackie is surprised that UVA is filled with white people.  Touts executive board experience.  She sent e-mails.

- Final question.  Strengths of UVA?

- Ryan says balance is single greatest strength.  Other law students despise law school.  He loves it.  (Edit:The president's job is basically to explain to Dean Ballenger why we annoyed people in public, so . . .)

- Jackie says Academics and collegiality and her new Tuesday coffee social times.   Wants to maintain collegiality through her experience.  She is the candidate of experience.

- Otis says, "It's the people."  Then why are our rankings falling?  He has known Brian L. since undergrad.  Wants to increase the people here.  "When elected . . ." he will ask alumni to give more money.  Wants students to give more money while we're here.  He can start on Day 1.

- Round of applause.

- Everyone left.

- Steph is running unopposed.  She talked for 5 seconds.  Endorsed Brian's mom.

- Ian plans on talking for a minute.  He messed up already.  He went to college somewhere.  He created some sort of allocation board somewhere.  His goal is to serve, not recognize when he's already won.

- Jerry says go vote.  The end.

Today's big winner: Democracy.

We're still wondering what happened to the North Grounds Basketball League.  Tommy was robbed!
