I'm getting ready to finish the second week at The Firm. I mentioned earlier that I'm not talking about the job, and I'm going to honor that. I needn't risk my job security, if for no other reason than y'all might get bored by the daily blog post of "SEND HALP PLS! NO EMPLOYMENT! CARTOONS R ROTTING MAH BRAIN!"

What I will say is for many people, myself included, change is very hard. To put it mildly, transitions suck. I liken it to being in a relationship or not. I'm fine with either (well I was in the past...now I have to admit I'd miss BISMOW and all of his infinite wisdom and messes) but that period of transition from one to the other? It stinks. The same goes with jobs.

Today was, easily, the worst day of work I've ever had in my life. That is saying a lot, considering my resume includes working at a cell phone kiosk, Super Target, The Gap, The Buckle (opening boxes...not even selling crappy clothes, just opening boxes in the stock room), and, yes I hate to admit this, the pink puke that is Victoria's Secret. So I think that calling this the worst day of work ever is saying a lot.

Every boss is different. Not necessarily bad, but different. And it is hard to go from one Type of boss to another Type of boss, headfirst, with little warning or guideposts. It takes awhile to work out the kinks, learning that this person hates being bothered on the phone, needs 2 cups of coffee before you ask a question, that you should never bring up XYZ, that you should bring up problems via email, or to never ever call their home but to always call their cell phone. These things take nothing more than time...but until them, well, life is hard. And today, I stumbled into a hornets nest at work. It doesn't make my work bad, or horrible, but the experience was horrible. I have my tail between my legs even though it ended on a purely positive note of both my accomplishments & promise. I'm embarrassed. Y'all....I cried. That is how much it sucked. It hit raw nerves and I'm rattled to the bone. To reiterate... I cried. And I'm fairly certain my secretary saw me. Mostly because my awesome coworker took me out for a drink and told me not to worry that this was the most typical first 2 weeks ever at The Firm and it only takes a month or two (or three or nine I suppose, if you are a slow learner or particularly dense?) to look around and go hey! I work here! Now lets kick some ass! Which I suppose would mean my secretary told people I was crying.  Which I can't even wrap my brain around the mortification. Cardinal rule of no crying & not wearing pink to a job interview. I. Is. Stoopid.

So tomorrow I have to go in (early! I'm always there early!) and put my head up and keep going. And chugging along. And learning, and remembering that I was just sworn in, that I'm a newbie, and that there is a learning curve which I just need to accept.

But tonight? Tonight my eyes are puffy and I'm sad and I'm thinking that law school was a horrible idea. That I'd make a better chef or event planner or retail manager or hell, cell phone seller. Although, in retrospect, I was the worst cell phone seller ever.

Which I suppose means that come 7:50 tomorrow morning, I'll be back in the saddle. For better or worse.  And with my ever handy billable hour paper, the fashion accessory all 25 year olds crave.
