A word from the masters

ADVERTISEMENTS

Today is Feb Club Eve's Eve.  For you 1Ls, in 24 hours you'll be on your way to your very first Feb Club party. We thought we'd track down two of the sports greatest heroes, Ted Theodore Logan and Bill S. Preston, Esq. (not their real names), to give some advice and expound on the meaning of Feb Club.

What is Feb Club?

TedTed: Feb Club is certainly an excellent adventure: drinking, loud music, breaking other people's stuff, hungover Con Law lectures, 2 story beer bongs, making new friends (w/ benefits), 3am Crackdonald's runs and the like.

Revelry aside, I think it's important that everyone knows that Feb Club is something more transcendent than mindless debauchery. These 29 days will be an emotional gauntlet: Something about Mary humiliating, Suberbad Awkward, and Mighty Ducks triumphant. You will find yourself at the bottom of of a Bud Light only to rediscover yourself the next morning...in bed...with a 3L. Boys and girls, this is going to be a beautiful month. Don't miss a night.

Bill: Feb Club is what makes UVA Law the best law school in the country to go to. No other law school throws 29 themed parties in the middle of February and parties hard at every one. O, also lots of mindless debauchery.

What makes you so qualified to talk about it?

Ted: 24 Feb Clubs last year. (Yes, I am embarrassed)

Bill: The fact that we love Feb Club so much. I am currently more excited for Feb Club than I was for the past 23 Christmas mornings, the time I lost my virginity, and the time I lost my “other” virginity combined. Also, we are basically always there, 28/29 last year for myself.

What are the rules for counting a party?

Ted: 1 Hour & 2 drinks. However, leave the "do just enough to get by" attitude you bring to studying at the door of the first party. Feb Club is about reckless abandon, points will be deducted for lukewarm performance. We will be watching all who claim to be going for the marathon and will out you if you lie about it.

BillBill: 1 hour spent at the party, 2 alcoholic beverages supplied by the party, and no excuses. Class, LRW briefs, and significant others are all just barriers to be overcome on the way to perfection. Even a lame party isn’t an excuse to leave early, it’s a call to turn it up and make that a kickass party.

There're a lot of sequel parties this year.  What were you favorites last year.

Ted: SNOW PANTS or NO PANTS. You can really tell a lot about a person based on their decision. Snow Pants? Guarded, conservative yet ready to throw down: she's hot, even if she tries to hide it, but you've got to put some work in to get to first base--think "She's All That." No pants? These folks come ready to make big deals happen. No pants on the dance floor makes for more "intimate" grinding. Plus, honestly there's nothing more comfortable than not wearing pants. I'm looking for someone to show up completely bottomless this year.

Bill: Das Klub was a great party last year and I’m happy to see the same house hosting it this year. 3 Easy Pieces is always a classic and since its at the beginning of the month hopefully it will be well attended and everyone will not only stay on theme, but stick to the spirit of the theme(as much skin as possible shown by both sexes). Snowpants or No pants also makes a return. That was the party last year that was so intense that it caused me to wake up in a mysterious location and miss my only party of the month.

Bill, you nearly died last year but not for an entire bottle of robotussin.  What sort of diet and medications are helpful for making all the parties?

Bill: The key to the iron man is survival. Sleep starts to easily take priority over class. Extra strength advil is nice for mitigating the first few hangovers, but you eventually get to a point where the only thing that will make last night’s hurt go away is this night’s (day’s) drinking. Diet is also very important because Feb Club provides a wealth of opportunities for taking one’s shirt off and you have to look good for that. I switch to an all natural diet of Flaxseed Oil, the Cream, the Clear, testosterone, and Winstrol.

Obviously class attendance takes a dip in February, what are some strategies for not falling behind?

Ted: Depends what you mean by "falling behind." If by falling behind you mean not spending countless hours going to class and keeping up with reading when you could just get a few outlines and take three days to learn the class in early May, then I've got nothing for you.

If you really want to "keep up" in the conventional sense, I suggest doing your reading and going to class. Honestly, we go to class for 12-15 hours a week. Read for maybe 2 hours a day max. That means we've got a 25 hour a week job. If people in the "real world" had 25 hour a week jobs they would go out every night. Pony up, get your shit done, come to the parties and have a great time. Remember, greatness requires work, pain & sacrifice, and like a (moderately) big man once said, "good things come to those who lift."

Bill: Class?

Let's say it's about 2 a.m. and you want to hook-up with someone without the whole law school finding out.  What's the strategy?

Ted: Not sure. Go to Coops.

Bill: You will be found out. That is an absolute. There is no way to avoid it. The key is to just embrace the shame immediately. I recommend high fiving your hookup in the hallway, or possibly writing a Law Weekly column about them.

What's the key to a memorable costume?

Ted: Craftsmanship

Bill: Craftsmanship can help make a costume awesome, but it all starts with a clever idea and the willingness to just go all out over the top.  Examples include off theme costumes last year like the chicken suit as well as the bottle labeled “Ru-486” brought to the Walk of Shame party.

What words would you give to a 1L who's not sure he (or she) can make it out every night?

Bill: Just do it. Like Ted said, are you going to regret missing that 9 am property class some day, or are you going to regret missing the party where your buddy fell through a wall, you hooked up with a 19 year old, and your PA body slammed a 2L in the street outside Buddhist? (I think that was a Thursday last year)

Any last words of advice?

Ted: Feb Club is like a last stand against adulthood. It's the abundant buffett of youthfulness and irresponsibility, before you settle down with the three square meals of adulthood: work, relationships, and sleep. Five years from now when your'e at Skadden doing due diligence at 11pm, you'll have the warm memory of Tuesday night ragers to kindle your cold soul. Get your full now, because our days are numbered.

Bill: I’ll see you out there.

We wish we could get these kind of numbers

As someone pointed out last year, we only run the best UVA blog for 11 out of 12 months of year.  Bill and Ted are the new brains behind Feb Club is Why Daddy Left and they've got their innagural post up.  Head on over and check it out, it'll be your one stop shop for Feb Club pictures, stories and party news for the next 30 days.  (P.S. Anyone worried about Feb Club photos lasting forver, this blog is going to die when we graduate and so will the evidence.)
