Gullibles? Travels

ADVERTISEMENTS

Many Senators were reluctant to support the New Start treaty with Russia because they fear that language in the preamble stating that the two sides recognize ?the interrelationship between strategic offensive arms and strategic defensive arms? and ?this interrelationship will become more important as strategic nuclear arms are reduced? would prohibit our development of missile defense systems. Now, pacified by a letter from president Obama promising that that language ?places no limitations on the development or deployment of our missile defense programs,? the Senate voted 59-37 to reject a Republican amendment modifying that language.

Perhaps this Senatorial movement from skepticism to support should be described as Gullibles? Travels.

Let?s see. This is the same Obama who has promised, just to pick a few examples (many from PolitiFact):

  • that he would not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000 ($200,000 for singles);

  • that he would not allow the continuation of the Bush tax cuts for rich fat cats;

  • that he would return earmarks to their 1994 levels;

  • that Obamacare would not prevent anyone from keeping his or her current health insurance;

  • that he would close Guantanamo;

  • that he would support repeal of the Defense Of Marriage Act;

  • that he would lead the most transparent administration in history;

  • that he would sign no bill into law that had not been publicly available on the Internet for five days

  • that he would allow the importation of prescription drugs;

  • that he would end no-bid contracts over $25,000;

  • that he would not hire lobbyists in his administration

  • that he would create a cap and trade system;

  • that he would introduce a comprehensive immigration reform bill in his first year;

  • that he would improve the political climate by abandoning partisanship for civility;
You will note that I did not even list the promise many saw in him to move beyond racial polarization and racial favoritism since I don?t know that he ever promised that, although he did encourage people to believe it.

Now he?s promised either that the Russians won?t regard our development of missile defense systems as a violation of the treaty or that he will continue to develop missile defense no matter what the Russians do or say.

Promises, promises.
