PROFESSOR IMMEL, RIP . . . Professor Vincent C. Immel, who taught contracts and remedies at St. Louis University School of Law since 1958, died on Thanksgiving morning at age 89.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has this article: "Vincent Immel dies; taught law at St. Louis U." It begins by noting that Professor Immel worked for the past 19 years without a salary--
In 1990, Vincent Immel retired from the St. Louis University Law School, where he had taught contracts and remedies since 1958.
But his love for teaching kept him on campus for almost 19 more years. For most of that time, he carried a full work load while declining a salary. And when he became unable to drive, his longtime secretary took him to work, where he maintained regular office hours, always taking the time to visit with colleagues and students and return e-mails from alumni.
In 1987, as a 1L, I had Professor Immel for contracts. Much of the material I seem to remember verbatim, which can be attributed either to Professor's Immel's ability to inspire his students or his ability to scare them to death. Though I was inspired toward the end of the year, I was scared to death the whole way through.
Many of Professor Immel's former students are leaving tributes here.
