Organize Your Life On a Weekly Basis

By Ben Glass

ADVERTISEMENTS

Stephen Covey, the author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, provides great insight into organizing your time. According to Covey, you should organize your life on a weekly basis, not daily. While this sounds like a simple statement, the benefits of actually following this advice are huge.

You know how quickly the day can get away from you. Many times, it feels impossible to check everything off your daily to-do list. If you organize your life, and your tasks, on a weekly basis, you have a better chance of getting things done.

In his book, Covey recommends that you organize yourself based on your multiple roles - spouse, parent, manager and so on. The idea is that you match weekly goals to each one of your roles. You then prioritize the goals and move them into the appropriate week. Now keep in mind, you are more than just a businessperson, so you are going to have personal goals too. If you don't prioritize the important things that impact your family, spiritual life and social life, you are going to soon become out of balance.

Covey also makes you think about the effect it has on your time when you say yes to something that's not important, meaning you have to examine what you would have to give up.
