BigLaw Falling for Small Scam

By Eric Lipman

ADVERTISEMENTS
If some guy named "Jimmy" called you at your office and said he had found an envelope addressed to you from the New York State Insurance Fund on the subway or in the back of a cab, would you tell him to bring it right over and reimburse him for his cab fare, with a little something extra for his trouble? Attorneys at two dozen New York law firms would. Apparently without opening the envelope to discover its contents were bogus, and that they'd been punked. Here's the story from the AmLaw Daily, and a link to the letter the NYSIF sent to the New York Law Journal making the should-be-obvious point that the NYSIF is not in on the game (nice font, guys). One of Jimmy's victims was Hughes Hubbard Partner Susan Millington Campbell, who paid up when Jimmy claimed to have found an envelope addressed to her from another law firm. Two questions for Ms. Campbell: Where in NY did he claim to be coming from that cab fare was $100? Truth, which client did you bill the "expense" to?
