: Law Blog - WSJ.comThe Milberg Case is Over. Finally.
By Nathan Koppel
It’s the end of an era; the government has wrapped up the most high profile prosecution of a law firm.
Yesterday, U.S. District Judge John Walter of Los Angeles sentenced the remaining two defendants in the Milberg case. Steve Cooperman, a former client of the firm who has admitted receiving millions in kickbacks, got 4 months in prison. The feds had wanted to put him away for 9 months.
Here’s the story from Reuters.
Cooperman, 66, kick started the Milberg investigation back in 1999 when he offered details about the firm’s kickbacks to try to get a lighter sentence in an unrelated case.
Walter also sentenced Paul Selzer, 68, a former attorney who helped Milberg funnel kickbacks, to two years probation.
In what amounts to a valedictory, Los Angeles prosecutor Richard Robinson said yesterday that “as a result of this case, 11 individuals have been convicted of felonies and the culprits will pay more than $100 million.”
