Scruggs steroid distribution falls flat in court, faces 25-year sentence

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Russoniello and DEA Special Agent in Charge Anthony D. Williams announced that Dr. Ramon Scruggs, a Tustin doctor who counted former Angels Troy Glaus and Scott Schoeneweis as patients, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to illegally distribute steroids and illegally smuggle human growth hormone into the United States.

Dr. Scruggs admitted that between 2000 and 2003, he distributed anabolic steroids and human growth hormone to individuals in a manner outside the usual course of professional practice while operating his medical practice at New Hope Health Center in Costa Mesa, California. He further admitted that on or about May 17, 2003, he illegally distributed the anabolic steroid testosterone to a person in Santa Clara County, and that he caused this distribution of anabolic steroids without a medically adequate examination.

Prosecutors say he will be sentenced Sept. 14 in San Jose, and faces a maximum 25 years in prison and $750,000 fine.
