Seal Beach medical marijuana suit settled

By Richard Binder

ADVERTISEMENTS

Bruce Benedict, a former resident of Seal Beach, sued the town's police in August 2008, claiming they unlawfully confiscated 40 to 50 medical marijuana plants and forced him to become a police informant.

Benedict suffers from hepatitis C and was prescribed the drug six years ago.  In February 2008, he alleges officers entered his home and took pictures of his marijuana plants.  The officers then turned those photos over to the DEA, according to the suit, which led to Benedict's arrest.

The officers responded to the suit by saying Benedict offered to become an informant with the DEA, not the police department, in order to avoid federal charges.

The $1 million suit was settled yesterday by the city for $32,500. Full story at the OC Register.
