: Legal Pad | LASubcontractor's restitutional responsibility for Catalina fire grows by $11.9M
By Richard Binder
Gary Dennis Hunt, a 51-year-old contract worker convicted of accidentally touching off a wildfire on Catalina Island in 2007, was ordered yesterday to pay nearly $12 million in restitution. This is in addition to the $4 million he was ordered to pay at his first restitution hearing last August.
Hunt was told then that the restitution amount could grow because one victim of the fire, the Southern California Edison company, had not calculated its loss in time for his original sentencing.
The monies are to go to the Wilson family, who lost their home in the Catalina blaze, and the Santa Catalina Island Co. and the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy. Hunt's employer at the time of the blaze is expected to pay the bulk of the restitution through the firm's insurance company, according to his lawyer, Michael Zimbert.
