: Legal Pad | LAUC San Diego Law School, revisited
By Richard Binder
UC San Diego has wanted to build a law school for decades. A proposed merger with the California Western School of Law in the early '80s was rejected by administrators at UC, who claimed it would be unnecessary.
But the idea is being reconsidered now. Faculty and administrators from both campuses formed a committee to explore the concept last month, emphasizing that if a school of law were established at UCSD it would be self-sustaining and not involve any state of campus funds - or at least not right away.
Supporters of the idea say such a partnership could advance research collaborations between the two campuses, benefiting both institutions. Critics, on the other hand, question whether UCSD's focus on research would be compatible with Cal Western's emphasis on teaching.
