Google Has Well Over A Million Advertisers
Jan 9, 2009 y Barry Schwartz

"Google: 1 Million Advertisers in 2007, More Now from the New York Times reports that Google has reported in their latest SEC filing that they have one million advertisers as of 2007. Now, that number is likely a lot more now, in 2009.

An analyst from UBS estimated Google has between 1.3 million and 1.5 million advertisers. Why is this important, because according to the analyst, it shows there is still room for a lot more growth in terms of the advertiser base. The New York Times piece says Google?s advertiser growth started at 89,000 in 2003, to 201,000 in 2004, 360,000 in 2005 and 600,000 in 2006." More here."

Peter Kafka at MediaMemo on All Things Digital calculates it further:

Google?s Long Tail: $16,000 Per Advertiser, Times One Million

"In 2007, the company had one million advertisers, each of whom spent around $16,000 a year. That?s not a shocking number?Google posted revenues of $16.6 billion that year, so the math checks out."

Anyway, at that value, Google must focus pretty heavily on serving the needs of their key customers - advertisers. I admit you still have to do a pretty great job of delighting your eyeballs and clickers to sustain your revenue.

If libraries were required to report to the SEC in 10K format, what would we calculate as the value of each cardholder to our enterprises? We clearly have some stats. What would attract positive financial attention - funding from government, private foundations, user donations, etc. - to libraries?

If you don't serve the primary funder then you better service the Heck out of your end-users and then effectively and continuously communicate those stories to the funder.
