DOJ will stop defending the Defense of Marriage Act

ADVERTISEMENTS

Attorney General Holder issued a statement today announcing that the President has instructed the Department of Justice not to defend the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as applied to legally married same-sex couples.  Further, he has informed Congress of this decison so that they might take action of their own.

The act defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman.  The law, while deemed unconstitutional by Holder and the president, will still be considered in effect until Congress repeals it.
