FORMER PROSECUTOR KIM GUADAGNO NAMED AS CHRISTIE'S RUNNING MATE
"Republican gubernatorial candidate Christopher Christie on Monday selected Monmouth County Sheriff Kimberly Guadagno, a former state and federal prosecutor, to be his candidate for lieutenant governor. Guadagno, 50, spent five years in the U.S. Attorney's Office, serving as deputy chief of the Corruption Unit, leaving in 1998. She then served for two years as deputy director of the Division of Criminal Justice under Attorneys General Peter Verniero and John Farmer Jr. Christie, citing Guadagno's executive experience as head of a 695-person department, used the announcement to pound at the twin themes of his campaign: ethics and fighting corruption.
DIVORCING PARTIES CAN'T CONTRACT AWAY N.J. JURISDICTION OVER SPOUSAL SUPPORT
"Couples who divorce in New Jersey and move out of state must return here for a change in alimony, even if they agree on a different jurisdiction, a Union County judge says. "A jurisdiction that establishes a spousal support order retains continuing exclusive jurisdiction for the life of the order," Family Part Judge Robert Mega wrote in Pek v. Prots, DDS No. 20-4-4598, a ruling approved for publication on Monday. While acknowledging that contract and forum-selection clauses are generally enforceable, Mega held that the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act supersedes the parties' forum choice as to spousal support."
BALLARD SPAHR AXES 2010 SUMMER ASSOCIATE PROGRAM
"When Morgan Lewis & Bockius cut its 2010 summer program in order to avoid a bottleneck of associates joining the firm in 2011 thanks to deferrals, the question then became: What other firm that has deferred associates would be next? The answer: Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, which pulled out of on-campus interviewing this year because it will not have a 2010 summer associate program. The firm had deferred its 2009 first-year associates for one year and any offers to this year's summers would be good for 2011. If the firm had a 2010 summer program, that would mean two classes of a ssociates starting in 2011. The firm said it would consider appropriate hires in non-Philadelphia offices if there were 'exceptional needs.' "
2009 GC COMPENSATION SURVEY: IN-HOUSERS GET SLIM RAISES
"The world economy may be limping. Economic sectors like banking and manufacturing are still waiting for those green shoots to pop up, while the real estate market continues to search for the bottom. But last year the general counsel of the nation's largest companies still managed to get a modest raise. That's the main finding of Corporate Counsel Magazine's 2009 GC Compensation Survey. There are nuances in the data, but the main point is that all cash metrics for last year were up, while anything involving stocks, such as stock grants, and option grants and cash outs were down. Average salaries rose 5 percent, to $596,393. That brought the average cash payout to $1.8 million, a 2.6 percent increase."
MAKE SURE WORKERS TAKE THEIR VACATIONS, EMPLOYMENT LAWYERS SAY
"With the shaky economy causing many employees to forgo taking a vacation, employment lawyers are urging employers to give workers an extra nudge this year and make sure they take time off. Recent studies show a big chunk of the workforce is saying no to vacation this year, worried that a short break from work may lead to a permanent one. That's bad news for employers and employees alike, attorneys say. Overworked employees are more prone to exhaustion and sickness and are less productive at work, while unused vacation time can trigger an administrative and payroll nightmare in the many states that mandate unpaid vacation days be cashed out at the end of the year"
