New Phone

By scott

ADVERTISEMENTS

Ok, that’s not totally true, but as I have had to put my HTC Desire in for repair [problem with Home and Back buttons periodically not working] I have had to get another phone to use until it come back. Now, I had planned to just let my local T-Mobile Shop do this, but they did not have any phone they could give me the first time I went in. I was told they were ‘getting some in’ later in the week, so returned then to discover that they still didn’t have any, and then a spur of the moment drop in the following week ended with my being told I’d be best calling every day to see if they had any and then getting them to keep it for me.

No offense T-Mobile (and the people I dealt with in the shop we all very nice) but that is a bit piss poor really. So by this point ? in the words of Ray Davis ? I’d got tired of waiting so I decided that I might as well just buy a cheap phone or face god knows how long waiting to get my phone even sent off.

I’m hoping the repair side of things will be better [actually I will say their Twitter people are pretty good ]

Enter the The LG GS101

According the Carphone Warehouse website ” The LG GS101 is simple and easy-to-use. [Hmm, not total convinced with that , but moving on] This slim, compact phone weighs just 65g, and will slip into your pocket or purse without weighing you down.[no argument there] A reliable phone for voice calls and text messages, GS101 doesn?t have any complicated features.[Again can’t argue with that as it doesn’t have any features really ? oh, sorry it has a calendar, and an alarm ] The large, comfortable buttons make messaging easy [yes, easy if taking 8-9 clicks to create and send a message is ‘easy’], and the traditional design will feel familiar and easy to get to grips with” [yes, again]

It cost me £9.99. It’s like a child’s (under 6) toy phone. BUT ? I can send texts [although my will to do so has been sapped] and make calls, and the call quality is not bad [poss better than both the Desire and the iPhone to be honest, but this isn’t really shock news to any owner of these devices who has ever owned an old ‘non smart’ phone]

Obviously I got new media and internet access withdrawal within a couple of days and had to revive my old first gen iTouch. So at least when in sight of a wifi connection I can feel connected. It’s all very sad really, but I do rely on the internet and Twitter to keep me going when I’m out and not having them is actually a bit annoying. I am ashamed to have admitted it.

Anyway, I could be with the GS101 for another 2 weeks yet, so ? I’m going to get my £9.99 worth out of it [ I do have to say, it is really quite amazing that you can make a functioning device for essentially nothing. Hat’s off to you LG, although I personally wouldn’t wish the phone on anyone long term.
