Diversity, leadership training suffers in downturn
"Law firm consultants and diversity advocates report that firms are spending less on leadership initiatives because of the economic downturn. Of course, other law firm programs such as business development, marketing and mentorship have also seen their budgets slashed since firms went into cost-cutting mode last fall. But the funding cuts to leadership training and diversity initiatives are especially notable given that firms loudly touted their growing commitment to those programs in recent years."
U.S. drops to third in ranking of 24 countries by IP protection and enforcement practices
"The United States slid to third from second in the European law firm Taylor Wessing's second annual ranking of 24 countries and economies by intellectual property protection and enforcement practices. The United States, which was the sole country whose overall ranking declined, now stands behind the United Kingdom and Germany in Taylor Wessing's 2009 Global Intellectual Property Index, which tabulates rankings in five types of intellectual property: patent, trademarks, copyright, design and domain names."
Thelen employee class stuck in federal court
"The lawsuit filed against Thelen by former employees seeking unpaid wages and vacation time will remain in federal court under a May 11 ruling. Two former Thelen employees who sued the defunct firm on behalf of a class of California workers had filed a motion to intervene in a related federal lawsuit, which makes similar claims on behalf of the firm's former employees in New York, Connecticut and California."
OPINION
Protect Afghan women
"As a result of the Personal Status Law enacted by the Afghan parliament in February and signed by President Karzai in March, Shi'a men may force their wives to yield to intercourse, bar them from going to work or school and even demand that they wear cosmetics. Widely viewed as a ploy to attract Shiites' support in his upcoming re-election bid, the statute was passed in an atmosphere of strong pressure and scare tactics. This is Talibanism redux".
