New Orleans retains ethics counsel
"New Orleans has hired two attorneys from New York's Kelley Drye & Warren to advise it on ethical issues and regarding a myriad of federal investigations targeting the city. Washington-based partner David Laufman will lead the firm's efforts with the assistance of associate Andrew Wein, according to the city contract. Laufman, formerly an assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, specializes in white collar crime and federal investigations."
Inmates with HIV finally get work release in Alabama
"After decades of being ostracized, Alabama prisoners with HIV can now participate in the state's work release program. Under pressure from the American Civil Liberties Union and HIV advocates, the Alabama Department of Corrections this week reversed a longstanding policy of prohibiting HIV-infected prisoners from taking part in programs that let inmates hold paying jobs during the day. According to the ACLU, South Carolina is now the only state that prohibits HIV-infected prisoners from participating in work release programs."
7th Circuit cuts off challenge to cell phone ban
"Chicago cell phone users fighting to fend off a city ordinance that bars them from driving and chatting on their phone without a hands-free device have lost another round. The 7th Circuit has upheld a district court ruling that the class action mounting a constitutional challenge to the 2005 city law, which also precludes texting and surfing the Internet while driving, 'has no legs.' "
Crackdown continues on California loan modification attorneys
"Continuing its crackdown on attorneys involved in alleged loan modification fraud, the State Bar of California obtained the resignation of two lawyers and filed charges against a third this month. All three are in Orange County. 'It seems to be the hotbed of loan modification scams,' said Suzan J. Anderson, the bar's supervising trial counsel. "
'Twitterjacking' suits face obstacles
"In May, St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa sued Twitter in California after an imposter set up an account in his name on the social media network. La Russa withdrew the case a month later, but other celebrities and public figures, including Tina Fey, Christopher Walken, Condoleezza Rice and Bill Gates, have been victims of so-called 'Twitterjacking.' White & Case partner BillCoats spoke with us about the prospects for lawsuits against Twitter involving the right of publicity."
