FROM THIS WEEK'S ISSUE | A law firm sells itself by not really selling itself
"Lightfoot, Franklin & White is a law firm that is notable for what it lacks: a full-service marketing and business development department. The absence of a well-oiled and well-funded marketing machine doesn't seem to be slowing down the Birmingham, Ala.-based litigation firm, however. The 55-attorney shop receives unusually high marks from clients."
"The Supreme Court of Canada on Dec. 19 released the reasons behind its June decision to allow a $42 billion acquisition of Montreal-based BCE Inc., or Bell Canada Enterprises, Canada's biggest telecommunications company and the owner of Bell Canada. The NLJ talked to Michael Gans, a New York-based lawyer at Canadian law firm Blake, Cassels & Graydon, about the court decision in the case."
"Sullivan & Worcester is taking its court fight with Dewey & LeBoeuf over Dewey's proposed fees in a federal securities receivership case directly to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and is asking the court to hold a hearing about the fees. "
"A federal judge has thrown out a claim by Grocery Outlet Inc. that Albertsons Inc. abandoned the Lucky Stores trademark when Albertsons and Lucky Stores merged in 1998. The Dec. 17 ruling highlights an open question in 9th precedent about the correct legal standard of proof to apply to a claim that a trademark owner has abandoned use of a languishing mark. Trademark law requires that abandonment of a trademark must be for at least three years and must be strictly proven before another can take over use of the mark."
"The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts is now posting as podcasts its audio recordings of proceedings involving proposed changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. The new access began with the Nov. 17 public hearing on proposed amendments to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure 26 and 56."
