Feds Cracking Down on Resale of Recalled Goods

By Angel L. Reyes, III

ADVERTISEMENTS

If you're planning to hold or shop at a garage sale, you should be aware that the federal government is watching. A new federal law makes it a crime to sell items that the Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled. The Commission has sent staffers out to make sure the bigger thrift stores know about it, but the same law applies to individual sellers.

According to Fox News:

Americans who slap $1 pricetags on their used possessions at garage sales or bazaar events risk being slapped with fines of up to $15 million, thanks to a new government campaign.

The "Resale Round-up," launched by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, enforces new limits on lead in children's products and makes it illegal to sell any items that don't meet those limits or have been recalled for any other reason.

The strict standards were set in the 2008 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act after a series of high-profile recalls of Chinese-made toys.

If you're selling a crib or a car seat, the responsibility is yours to make sure the CPSC has not recalled it and that it doesn't present a danger. And remember, it's not just baby items. The government recalls products adults use too. For more information on product recalls call 214.526.7900 or email Angel.
