: The GavelJustice at Stake Highlighted in Wall St. Journal
By Peter Hardin
Justice at Stake got top attention when the Wall Street Journal’s “Washington Wire” recently reported the viewpoints of leading interest groups on Justice John Paul Stevens’ announcement of his planned retirement.
The Washington Wire article first quoted Bert Brandenburg, executive director of JAS, as describing Justice Stevens’ role in deciding the landmark Caperton v. Massey case about special-interest spending in judicial elections.
“Justice Stevens voted in the majority to ensure that judges must step aside in certain cases involving their campaign supporters,” Brandenburg said. “At oral argument, he led questioning that helped produce a majority vote to insulate courts from special interest money.” You can read more of Brandenburg’s statement in the JAS press release about Justice Stevens’ announcement.
