: The GavelThis Term, Supreme Court not so Predictable
By Peter Hardin
The tendency of some court-watchers to critique the current Supreme Court as pro-corporation and conservative gets a challenge in an update on its recent rulings.
A Los Angeles Times article reports:
“The justices have been unanimous, or nearly so, in dealing defeats to employers and to corporations. They have also taken the side of hard-luck plaintiffs who were mistreated by the government.”
Legal experts documented no transformation of the court, but rather its unpredictability.
It “demonstrates the court isn’t reflexively pro-corporate and conservative,” said Washington, D.C. lawyer Thomas Goldstein.
It’s early, too. The court has announced 26 rulings, about one-third of its total expected for the term. Five cases have involved the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; it has won one, and lost four.
