I need your help raising $7,000 in donations!! (link to donation page)
.
It took 28 years of life before cancer personally effected me… Yes, like the general public, I knew about cancer, but not like I do now. A little over a year ago my mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.. Like so many other stories she was such a healthy person. I can remember where I was when I found out, such a alarming and fearful experience.
A couple months later, while my mother is in the middle of chemotherapy, my significant other’s (Shannon) father was diagnosed with lymphoma. I think at this point we became overwhelmed and led us to answer the next question:
So why Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)? How did I get involved?
While Shannon was caring for her father (8 weeks of on/off hospitalized chemo) she became associated with LLS .
This organization really is amazing (I’ll post some stats down the page); They offer 24/7 help lines, help with prescription/procedure costs, amazing medical research, and a VERY active support group. So many things that have not been available to my mother are freely made available to blood cancer patients.
Shannon and I raised money for the Light The Night walk last year and decided this year we wanted to take it a step further and join Team In Training.

I NEED YOUR HELP!
——————————–
Every Saturday morning, and randomly during the week, a Team of us hike in area parks. Big deal right? That’s what I thought until I started attending these
practices. This is serious work, and it has to be since we’re going to hike 10 miles into and out of the Grand Canyon.
With a 1,200ft elevation change, this is a serious hike, shannon and I have both dedicated our time, money (gear isn’t cheap) and energy.. But I can’t do it without your help. Can you help me achieve my ultimate goal?

What Are Blood Cancers?
————————————
Leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes are cancers that originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissues. The diseases result from an acquired genetic injury to the DNA of a single cell, which becomes abnormal (malignant) and multiplies continuously. The accumulation of malignant cells interferes with the body’s production of healthy blood cells.
Random Facts:
- An estimated 138,530 people in the United States will be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma in 2008.
- Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma will cause the deaths of an estimated 52,910 people in the United States this year.
- These blood cancers will account for nearly 9.4 percent of the deaths from cancer in 2008
- Every ten minutes, another child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma.
- Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20

What LLS does with your donation?
——————————
The support you provide is invested wisely.

In fiscal year 2008 $71.4 million was invested, including funding for 129 new grants to researchers in academic institutions and $4 million in contracts through the LLS Therapy Acceleration Program. As of June 2008, LLS was supporting 388 research projects and 9 research contracts in the U.S., Canada, and 14 other countries. LLS also provides financial assistance to patients; sponsors scientific conferences around the country; produces educational materials and videos; and runs dozens of Family Support Groups nationwide. Because we receive no federal funding, we depend on you for continued support of these needed programs.
————————-
What LLS has accomplished?
————————-
LLS has been developing new initiatives that have strengthened the organization’s role as the leading private funder of blood cancer research and provider of programs for patients and their families.
With the help of major fundraising campaigns, including Team In Training, the world’s largest endurance sports training program, and Light The Night Walk, LLS has supported more than $600 million in research since 1949.
The commitment to cutting-edge science has contributed to an unprecedented rise in survival rates for some blood cancers. The relative five-year survival rate for people with leukemia, for example, nearly quadrupled in the past 48 years.Hodgkin lymphoma is now considered one of the most curable forms of cancer, thanks to radiation, chemotherapy or a combination of the two.
