Why Don't Any TV Legal Assistants Look, Um, Real?

By Lynne DeVenny

ADVERTISEMENTS
Or, Like Me?

Exhibit A: (Pssssst, the pic to your right). This is Rhonda (Stephanie Lemelin) the legal assistant on ABC's new legal drama, The Whole Truth. She is 12 (okay, I made that part up). The actress describes her character, "They dress me in the cutest clothes. Rhonda's a smart, sexy young woman working her way up the ladder. Her outfits are vastly different from my normal everyday tomboy clothes because I'm usually in sweats, covered in dog."

And I'm usually dressed in perhaps not the cutest clothes and still covered in dog. (Which is my passive-aggressive way of bringing my dog to work...)

And the good hair all these fictional legal assistants have - c'mon, we're usually the ones dragging banker's boxes out of the back of SUVs in the rain. Try getting an actress who has a few spiky gray hairs waving around like antennae on top of her head - then I'll be able to relate.

As excited as I am about legal support staffers finally getting some representation in television's law firms, when are the networks going to give us a character that really has some depth, you know, a single mom, a couple of kids, a mortgage, an actual clothing size, a little living under her belt - heck, maybe even wearing a five-year old suit straight off the rack from JCPenney.

You know, a real sexy woman.
