Google this! Google v. DOJ

At a final hearing on February 18, 2010, U.S. District Judge Denny Chin heard statements from interested parties in the case against Google and their attempt to scan books into an online database. The president of the National Federation of the Blind, Marc Mauer, is supporting Google's efforts and how it allow access to 10 million books. Other supporters of Google creating the world's largest digital library on the Internet told Judge Chin that it would benefit society.

Opponents, including authors, foreign governments, corporate rivals, and the Department of Justice argue that Google's plan was about profit, not access to books. Do we not live in a capitalist society? Do we not have free libraries (thank you Benjamin Franklin) that let you 'borrow' books with nothing more than a library card?

In this day and age of a 'plugged in society' doesn't it make sense to have books available on the internet? Google defends their agreement with authors and compliance with copyright law. The Department of Justice is raising antitrust concerns and 'anticompetitive advantages on a single entity-Google.'

Not surprisingly, Amazon (Kindle), Microsoft, and Yahoo are all opposed to Google's online library.

Judge Chin will not be ruling on this $125 million settlement case today stating, 'There is just too much to digest' referring to the 'voluminous materials…submitted' and the repetition of material.
