Man's Best Friend brings WWII grenade to its German owner.

By Steve Lombardi

ADVERTISEMENTS

Just recently in Germany a dog found and retrieved to its owner a U.S. grenade left from World War II. The owner lived near Erkrath, Germany. Police were summoned to disarm it after it was properly identified. Live ammunition continues to this day to be found in Europe. WWII or the Second World War took place from September 1, 1939 until 1945.

'The start of the war is generally held to be September 1, 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. Other dates for the beginning of war include the Japanese invasion of Manchuria on September 13, 1931,[21][22] the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War on July 7, 1937,[23][24] or one of several other events. Other sources follow A. J. P. Taylor, who holds that there was a simultaneous Sino-Japanese War in East Asia, and a Second European War in Europe and her colonies, but they did not become a World War until they merged in 1941; at which point the war continued until 1945. This article uses the conventional dating.[25]

The end of the War also has several dates. Some sources end it from the armistice of August 14, 1945, rather than the formal surrender of Japan (September 2, 1945); in some European histories, it ended on V-E Day (May 8, 1945). The Treaty of Peace with Japan was not signed until 1951.'

American or U.S. grenades looked like a small pineapple. The design is characteristic of anti-personnel weaponry that explodes after a short release. Wikipedia indicates there are five characteristics of hand grenades.

Hand grenades have five characteristics:

  • Their employment range is short.
  • Their effective kill radius is small, roughly 5 meters.
  • Their effective casualty radius is large. Approximately 15 meters.
  • Their delay element permits safe throwing.
  • Their hard shell enables grenades to ricochet off hard surfaces, like walls, before detonating.

Hand grenades have:

  • A body containing filler.
  • A filler, the chemical or explosive for fragmentation.
  • A fuse causing the grenade to explode by ignition or detonation.
