: Mike Conaway's BlogInside with an Intern
I can?t believe two months have already passed. This Friday will be my last day as an intern in the office of Congressman Mike Conaway. When I began this internship at the end of May, after all my finals at the University of Texas had wrapped up, I headed straight for ?the hill?. I soon learned that staffers refer to the capitol and its surrounding area as the hill, a luxury I was not afforded as an intern.
As an intern, referring to this area as the hill landed you a spot on the intern blog spot, a place where staffers get to poke fun at interns for thinking we are really cool. Although, I tried my hardest not to adopt this mentality in an effort to avoid finding my name in the pages of this blog, when it comes down to it?this is really cool. I feel very fortunate to have had this wonderful opportunity. Getting to know the other interns and staffers, adapting to the hill culture, learning the ins and outs of the capitol building, and my daily visits to the Longworth cafeteria that made my time here such a great experience. Not to mention, I love the metro. I would encourage anyone to take the chance to come work out here. I?ve really enjoyed watching Fox/ C-span all day, helping out the staff, and replying to constituent mail (and yes we do read every piece of mail). Two months ago, I wouldn?t have expected to enjoy any of the above activities. But, I soon discovered how fun it is to be in the know of what?s going on in Congress and actually be able to understand most of it. In August I?ll be heading back to Austin for my junior year, but I?m sure to miss D.C. Have a good rest of the summer.- Claire Logan, Intern for the Office of Rep. Mike Conaway in Washington, DC
