In an attempt to improve not only the electric grid, FERC is supporting and reviewing environmental impact statements for gas transmission lines. By example, the Williams Gas Pipeline-Transco's proposed mid-Atlantic Connector Expansion is a major project which will be affecting not only Virginia, but also Maryland and North Carolina.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is preparing an environmental assessment of Williams Gas Pipeline-Transco's Mid-Atlantic Connector Expansion Project, which includes improvements at Williams-Transco's compressor station in Chatham.
"This environmental assessment will be used by the commission in its decision-making process to determine whether the project is in the public convenience and a necessity," said Kimberly D. Bose, a spokesman for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C.
Transco's planned Mid-Atlantic Connector Expansion Project will increase capacity in its natural gas pipeline by 142,000 dekatherms per day from the company's Cascade Creek Interconnect in Rockingham County, N.C., to delivery points in northern Virginia and Maryland.
