What are the legal aspects of marrying someone carrying a huge amount of debt?


What happens to a person that get's married to someone who has a large amount of debt? Is the person not bringing the debt into the NEW marriage responsible for the sdebt of the other (NEW SPOUSE)? How can someone protect themselves from acquiring another person's personal debt that was acquired by the other person BEFORE the marriage? Examples of the debt are as follows: Medical Bills, credit card debt, multiple "OTHER" personal debt.
