ADVERTISEMENTS
pThe National Health Information Network (NHIN) may get information moving as early as the first quarter of 2009.nbsp; Innbsp;itsnbsp;December 16th a href="http://ssa.gov/pressoffice/pr/nhin-pr.htm"Press Release/a,nbsp;the Social Security Administration (SSA) indicates that it will begin receiving medical records for some disability applicants via the quot;MedVirginiaquot; health information exchange (HIE) based in Richmond.nbsp;nbsp;/p
pSSA and MedVirginia were also among several federal agencies and HIEs that participated in demonstrations of the national network during the 3rd annualnbsp;a href="http://www.hhs.gov/healthit/healthnetwork/forums/"NHIN Forum in Washington D.C./a, which took place this December 15-16.nbsp;nbsp;Other federal agencies that are participating in the a href="http://www.hhs.gov/healthit/healthnetwork/trial/"NHIN Trial Implementation/a includenbsp;Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Veterans Administration (VA), Department of Defense (DOD)nbsp;and Indian Health Service.nbsp; There are also several other statenbsp;HIEs that are actively participating in the NHIN Trial Implementation, including HIE networks from Indiana, nbsp;North Carolina, Ohio, Delaware, West Virginia.nbsp;/p
pAs I've posted before, New Jerseynbsp;is activelynbsp;working on developingnbsp;its ownnbsp;state-wide HIE.nbsp; The a href="https://wwwnet1.state.nj.us/GOV/APPT/GOV_APPT_WEB/Default.aspx"New Jersey Health Information Technology (NJ HIT) Commission/a is charged withnbsp;approvingnbsp;the plan for the creation of annbsp;infrastructurenbsp;to move health information, in a confidential and secure manner, among participants in a state-widenbsp;RHIO.nbsp; On December 4, 2008, I participated in the first meeting of the NJnbsp;HIT Commission, which wasnbsp;both inspiring andnbsp;daunting at the same time, with respect to the roadnbsp;that lies ahead.nbsp;nbsp;Yet, I look forward to working together with the other Commissionnbsp;members during a time ofnbsp;potentially revolutionary changes to health care delivery in this State, and nationally./pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/HipaaHealthLaw/~4/489709860" height="1" width="1"/Full post as published by HIPAA Health Law & Technology on December 19, 2008 (boomark / email).
